It shall be the duty of the animal control officer or his/her authorized representative under the auspices of a veterinarian to order the humane destruction, by any animal control officer or authorized representative, of any animal lawfully taken into the custody of the animal control officer which is affected with any dangerous or communicable disease, or which is facing death due to injury.
