The purpose of this chapter is to establish a nonjudicial Human Relations Commission consistent with the Iowa Civil Rights Act (Chapter 216, Code of Iowa); to recognize the authority of the Iowa Civil Rights Commission and foster use of its procedures and programs; to increase awareness, understanding and appreciation of diversity, equity and inclusion within the community, and to proclaim a public policy of nondiscrimination by securing freedom from discriminatory practices based on a person's race, creed, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, religion, ancestry or disability as defined in Iowa Code Chapter 216 ("Protected Groups"), protecting individual dignity, ensuring their full productive capacities, preserving the public safety, health, and general welfare, and promoting the interests, rights, and privileges of individual citizens within the City.
