(A) Biting dogs. Any dog suspected of being afflicted with rabies, or which has bitten a person and caused an abrasion of the skin of such person, shall be seized and impounded under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian or placed in the city dog pound for an observation period of ten days. If, upon examination by a veterinarian at the end of the observation period, the dog has no signs of rabies, it may be released to the owner, or in the case of a stray, it shall be impounded and/or disposed of in accordance with applicable ordinances.
(B) Rabid animals. Any dog or other animal suspected of being rabid or of having been bitten by a rabid animal may be confined by order of the animal control officer or Police Chief and in the manner and for the time ordered by him or her, to determine whether the animal is rabid. If a person has been bitten or if there is good reason to believe that a person has been otherwise infected by such animal, the animal control officer or Police Chief may have the animal put to death in a humane manner and have it examined by medical authority to determine whether it has rabies.
