2-13-6: POWERS AND DUTIES:
The committee is an advisory body, and shall have such powers and duties as the mayor and board of trustees may, from time to time, determine. The initial powers and duties of the committee shall be as follows:
   A.   Research and promote recycling programs for the Village of Hawthorn Woods' residents and employees.
   B.   Review and implement urban forestry and environmental programs.
   C.   Serve as Village Tree Board.
   D.   Review and periodically update the village's insect and disease control ordinances and recommend changes for review.
   E.   Review wetland and natural area management programs and water quality standards.
   F.   Design and promote village "green programs".
   G.   Review natural areas management plans and promote educational programs for residents to adopt environmentally friendly landscape and natural habitat practices.
   H.   Raise public awareness of environmental issues by hosting public events or articles written for the village newsletter as the board so approves.
   I.   Seek grant opportunities to fund special environmental projects, environmental education, or programs approved by the board.
   J.   Foster positive relationships with neighboring schools or other agencies or districts to partner environmental conservation outcomes that the board authorizes.
   K.   Encourage natural resource stewardship by working with homeowners and Homeowners Associations or being present at village events to raise awareness as the board directs.
   L.   Plan or sponsor village wide programs for Earth Day, Arbor Day or any special nature appreciation workshop that may be set up as a special event or concert series.
   M.   Review and report on all matters referred to the committee by the mayor and board of trustees.
   N.   Design and suggest content for a sustainability page on the village's website for the communication and promotion of sustainable efforts by the village.
   O.   Promote the village's sustainability efforts including an Aging in Place Program.
   P.   Encourage citizen participation in community initiatives including International Dark Sky compliance and educational efforts.
   Q.   Support Audubon International Community efforts in Hawthorn Woods.
   R.   Work with the village's Sustainability Coordinator or appointed staff liaison.
   S.   Ensure all tree planting, selection, and management shall be in compliance with the Village of Hawthorn Woods Urban Forest Management Plan.
   T.   All vendors working on any tree initiative with the Village shall carry insurance in amounts specified by the Village and produce a Certificate of Insurance as directed by the Chief Operating Officer or their designee.
