9-6-2: DEFINITIONS:
BANNER SIGNS: A sign that is temporary, having characters, letters, or illustrations applied to plastic, cloth, canvas, or other similar material, with the purpose of such nonrigid material being for background.
FREESTANDING SIGN: A sign that is supported by one or more columns, upright pole or brace extended from the ground or from an object on the ground, or that is erected on the ground where no part of the sign is attached to any part of a building, structure, or other sign; the term includes a "pole sign", "pedestal sign", and "ground sign".
MARQUEE SIGN: A sign depicted upon, attached to, or supported by a marquee.
PROJECTING SIGN: A sign attached to a building or extending in whole or in part fifteen inches (15") or more horizontally beyond the surface of the building to which the sign is attached or suspended from a canopy.
ROOF SIGN: A sign supported by poles, uprights, or braces extending from the roof of a building, or projecting above the roof of a building.
SANDWICH BOARD SIGN: A temporary sign that is generally constructed in such a manner as to form an "A" or a tentlike shape that is placed on, but not permanently attached to the ground. This definition also includes signs of similar temporary nature but that are constructed with a base and a single upward sign face, forming an upside down "T".
SIGN: Any device, fixture, placard, or structure that uses any color, form, graphic, illumination, symbol, or writing to advertise, announce the purpose of, or identify the purpose of a person or entity, or to communicate information of any kind to the public.
SIGN, ILLUMINATED: Any sign illuminated by electricity, gas, or other artificial light including reflecting or phosphorescent light.
SIGN, LIGHTING DEVICE: Any light, string of lights, or group of lights located or arranged so as to cast illumination on a sign.
SIGN, OFF PREMISES: Any sign, including, without limitation, a billboard or general outdoor advertising device, that advertises or directs attention to a business, commodity, service, or activity conducted, sold, or offered other than on the same lot or within the same building upon which such sign is located.
SIGN, ON PREMISES: Any sign related to a business or profession conducted, or a commodity or service sold or offered upon the premises, where such sign is located.
WALL SIGN: A sign displayed upon or against the wall of an enclosed building, where the exposed face of the sign is in place parallel to the plane of the wall and extends not more than fifteen inches (15") horizontally from the face of the wall.
WINDOW SIGN: A sign that is painted on, applied or attached to, or located within one foot (1') from the window and can be seen from the exterior of the structure, but excludes merchandise included in a window display. (2010 Code)
