§ 10.05 DEFINITIONS.
   (A)   General rule. Words and phrases shall be taken in their plain or ordinary and usual sense. But technical words and phrases having a peculiar and appropriate meaning in law shall be understood according to their technical import.

   (B)   Definitions. For the purpose of this code, the following definitions shall apply unless the context clearly indicates or requires a different meaning.
      APPOINTED OFFICIALS. The officials appointed by the Mayor to administer and supervise the departments of the city.
      BOARD. The Board of Public Works and Safety.
      CITY, MUNICIPALITY, or MUNICIPAL CORPORATION. The City of Greenfield, Indiana.
      THIS CODE or THIS CODE OF ORDINANCES. The municipal code as modified by amendment, revision, and adoption of new titles, chapters, or sections.
      CLERK-TREASURER. The Clerk- Treasurer of the city, who shall perform the duties set forth in Chapters 30 and 31.
      COUNCIL. The Common Council of the city.
      COUNCIL MEMBER. Any member of the Council of the city.
      DEPARTMENTS. The Departments of the city.
      ELECTED OFFICERS. The Mayor, the Clerk-Treasurer, and the Council Members of the city.
      EXECUTIVE OFFICER. The Mayor.
      MAY. The act referred to is permissive.
      MAYOR. The Mayor of the city.
      MONTH. A calendar month, unless otherwise expressed.
      MUST or SHALL. The act referred to is mandatory.
      OFFICIAL. The elected officers, appointed officials, and employees of the city.
      OWNER. Applied to a building or land, includes any part owner, joint owner, tenant in common, tenant in partnership, or joint tenant of the whole or a part of such building or land, either alone or with others.
      PERSON. Extends to and includes person, persons, firm, corporation, partnership, trustee, lessee, or receiver. Whenever used in any clause prescribing and imposing a penalty, the terms PERSON or WHOEVER, as applied to any unincorporated entity, shall mean the partners or members thereof, and, as applied to corporations, the officers thereof.
      PERSONAL PROPERTY. Every species of property except real property.
      PROPERTY. Real and personal property.
      PUBLIC BODY. The Council, the Board, and all other commissions, committees, or boards of the city, whether established by state statute, local ordinance, policy, motion, order, resolution, or otherwise.
      REAL PROPERTY. Lands, tenements, and hereditaments and all chattels real.
      SIDEWALK. The portion of a street between the curb lines of the lateral lines of a roadway and the adjacent property lines intended for the use of pedestrians.
      STATE. The State of Indiana.
      STREET. Except as provided in the traffic code, the entire width between property lines of every way or place of whatever nature when any part thereof is open to the use of the public, as a matter of right.
      UTILITIES. The city’s utility departments which are comprised of the Electric Utility, the Water Utility, the Wastewater Utility, and the Stormwater Utility.
      WRITTEN or IN WRITING. Any representation of words, letters, or figures whether by printing or otherwise.
      YEAR. A calendar year, unless otherwise expressed.
