§ 36.142 BEREAVEMENT LEAVE.
   (A)   Bereavement leave must be arranged with the executive officer, his or her designee, and/or the department head through a written request. This must be done as soon as practical. The request must be executed by the employee. It must state the relationship between the deceased and the employee and the length of time needed for the requested absence.
   (B)   All regular full-time city employees, police command staff, and firefighters working administrative shifts will be granted:
      (1)   Paid leave of up to five work days in the event of the death of the employee’s:
         (a)   Spouse;
         (b)   Child;
         (c)   Stepchild;
         (d)   Parent; or
         (e)   Individuals living within the home for whom the employee has legal guardianship.
      (2)   Paid leave of up to three work days in the event of the death of the employee’s:
         (a)   Mother-in-law or father-in-law;
         (b)   Stepparent or corresponding in-laws;
         (c)   Sibling and corresponding in-laws;
         (d)   Great grandparent, grandparent, or corresponding in-laws;
         (e)   Grandchild or step-grandchild;
         (f)   Half-sibling or corresponding in-laws;
         (g)   Aunt, uncle, or corresponding in-laws;
         (h)   Niece, nephew, or corresponding in-laws; or
         (i)   Other residents of the household of the employee.
   (C)   Firefighters working 24-hour shifts will be granted:
      (1)   Paid leave of up to three work days in the event of the death of the employee’s:
         (a)   Spouse;
         (b)   Child;
         (c)   Stepchild;
         (d)   Parent; or
         (e)   Individuals living within the home for whom the employee has legal guardianship.
      (2)   Paid leave of one work day in the event of the death of the employee’s:
         (a)   Mother-in-law or father-in-law;
         (b)   Stepparent or corresponding in-laws;
         (c)   Sibling and corresponding in-laws;
         (d)   Great grandparent, grandparent, or corresponding in-laws;
         (e)   Grandchild or step-grandchild;
         (f)   Half-sibling or corresponding in-laws;
         (g)   Aunt, uncle, and corresponding in-laws;
         (h)   Niece, nephew, and corresponding in-laws; or
         (i)   Other residents of the household of the employee.
   (D)   Police officers who work 12-hour shifts should refer to their SOPs for their allotment of bereavement days.
   (E)   In the event of the death of a family member not listed, an employee should use personal time.
   (F)   If the employee is on FMLA leave, being 29 U.S.C. §§ 2611 et seq., or military leave at the time of the family member’s passing, he or she will not be compensated for the bereavement days.
