Where possible and appropriate, the following guidelines shall be utilized in determining road names and addresses.
(A) Road names shall not duplicate road names already assigned, irrespective of road name prefixes or suffixes, except for roads located within different corporations. The four cardinal points of the compass may be used as a prefix or suffix to designate portions of a continuous street.
(B) A street name shall not be differentiated using the same name by changing the street suffix such as a street or avenue except that those duplicate streets having different suffixes must be directly accessible from the street having the same name with the different suffix. An example would be Birch Court must be accessible from Birch Street.
(C) As a general rule, a roadway shall have only one name throughout its entire length.
(D) State highways will retain their name and number. Where county roads run in a true east-west direction or north-south direction, the grid number as a name will be retained.
(E) Dead end roads will be designated as LN (Lanes) and numbered accordingly to their grid placement.
(F) All roads that do not fall accordingly to the grid and run diagonally or meander in direction will be designated as RD (Road) and given a name. The address ranges between the control points such as section lines for a meandering road will be spaced out accordingly with the standard odd/even designators remaining constant throughout the entire road segment.
(G) All private drives that have three or more residents and are more than one-eighth mile long or with three or more houses that cannot be seen from the main road will be named according to the wishes of the residents effected and be designated as LN (Lane).
(H) Names should be appropriate for the individual road and the area’s nature and character, enhance community image, reflect historical, physical, aesthetic or local color and, in every case, be in good taste.
(I) No two roads shall be given (substantively) the same name or similar sounding name.
(J) Street names already in use in cities and towns should be avoided.
(K) Directional names, initials and punctuation in names should be avoided.
(L) The names of living persons should be avoided. Historical references are acceptable, but should not duplicate the name of any person living on the road.
(M) Because of sign size, the maximum number of characters in a road name cannot exceed 16 (including spaces).
