7-3-1: DEFINITIONS:
The following words and phrases, when used in this chapter, shall have the meanings respectively ascribed to them unless otherwise stated:
BICYCLE: Every device or vehicle propelled by human power upon which a person may ride, having two (2) wheels in tandem. For the purpose of this chapter, whenever "bicycle" is used, it shall include tri-wheelers.
BIKE PATH: A dedicated bikeway for which a separate surface has been provided for the primary use of bicycles.
BIKE ROUTE: A bikeway on a shared roadway with the joint use of bicycles, motor vehicles, and other roadway users.
BIKE TRAIL: A bike route or bike path, or combination of both.
DRIVER: Every person who operates, propels or is in physical control of a bicycle upon any roadway, bike path or other public way.
HANDICAPPED: Any person meeting the definition of "handicapped" under any statute of the state of Illinois.
PEDESTRIAN: Every person who utilizes any roadway, bicycle path or other public way on foot.
RIDER: Every person who attaches himself or rides upon a bicycle, along with the driver.
RIGHT OF WAY: The entire width between the boundary lines of ways publicly dedicated when any part thereof is opened to use by the public for purpose of vehicular travel.
ROADWAY: That portion of public right of way improved and ordinarily used for vehicular travel, exclusive of the shoulder. In the event a highway includes two (2) or more separate roadways, the term "roadway", as used herein, shall refer to any such roadway separately, but not to all such roadways collectively.
TRAIL PARK: Those designated public areas along a bike trail. Applicable portions of bike paths can be included.
TRI-WHEELER: Every device or vehicle propelled by human power upon which a person may ride with three (3) wheels, two (2) of which parallel each other in the rear. (Ord. 91-65, 11-12-1991)
