(A) (1) All electrical contractors and electricians operating and doing business within the city shall first secure from the Kentucky State Building and Housing Department a license and pay the fees therefor to the Kentucky State Building and Housing Department as may from time to time be prescribed by it.
(2) Prior to the issuance of the license and to determine the qualifications and abilities of applicant, the Kentucky State Building and Housing Department shall conduct examinations in writing, at the times as it may determine upon receipt of a written request for an examination accompanied by applicable fees. However, any electrical contractor or journeyman electrician who has more than five years full-time actual experience as an electrical contractor or journeyman electrician, shall be exempt from examination. In all other cases, the Kentucky State Building and Housing Department shall issue licenses to applicants who have satisfactorily passed examination, as hereinbefore set out and have otherwise established their abilities to perform electrical work in accordance with the regulations as established by the Kentucky State Building and Housing Department.
(3) No written examination shall be required of an applicant for renewal of a license who applies during the effective period of an existing license. Nonresident electrical contractors and electricians shall be governed by the same regulations as resident electrical contractors and electricians.
(4) Electrician applicants of each classification may work on a temporary permit from the Kentucky State Building and Housing Department until the next scheduled period.
(B) Apprentice electricians are expressly excluded from the licensing and examination requirements of this section.
(C) Before any permit is issued pursuant to law within the effective area of this chapter for the alteration, construction or repair of electrical wiring, and before approval of any inspection required within the effective area of this chapter is issued by any inspection agency, the permit or approval certificate shall bear the license number assigned as provided in this section, to the electrical contractor performing the work.
