§ 31.33 CITY ATTORNEY.
   (A)   The Mayor shall contract with a practicing attorney for a period of not less than two years, nor more than four years, who shall have been licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Kentucky for a period of not less than four years, to provide general legal services for the city, and to act as City Attorney. The contract shall provide for that attorney or that attorney's firm to provide legal services as the City Attorney as set forth in this section. The attorney or firm shall provide evidence of malpractice insurance coverage in the amount of at least $1,000,000 per occurrence and $2,000,000 aggregate. The contract for general legal services as City Attorney shall be approved by the City Council, but nothing in this section shall abrogate the Mayor's ability to hire contractors for specific projects as may be necessary.
   (B)   Duties. The duties of the City Attorney shall be as follows:
      (1)   The City Attorney shall serve as legal advisor to the City Council, and to city officers and employees on matters pertaining to their duties. Unless excused by the Mayor, the City Attorney shall attend all regularly scheduled City Council meetings, and shall attend special Council meetings and administrative board meetings upon request. The City Attorney shall prepare or review all contracts of the city submitted to him, and shall prepare all normal and usual administrative ordinances, executive orders and legal correspondence.
      (2)   The City Attorney shall prosecute and defend the city in any and all suits or actions at law or equity to which the city may be a party, or in which it may be interested. The City Attorney shall perform all legal work in connection with any improvement projects of the city, including ordinances, resolutions and other documents, including easements, connected therewith. The City Attorney shall assist with the collection of unpaid taxes and assessments of the city, and shall perform other duties as may from time to time be required by the City Council or the Mayor.
