For the purpose of this chapter, the following definitions shall apply unless the context clearly indicates or requires a different meaning.
AREA. For ground signs, encompasses the extremities of the sign within the smallest possible area using eight or fewer straight lines. For all other signs, encompasses the extremities of the sign within the smallest possible area using four or fewer straight lines.
PUBLIC WAY. Any street, highway, road, alley, right-of-way, easement or publicly maintained sidewalk or pedestrian walkway.
SIGN. Any display to public view of letters, words, numerals, figures, statues, devices, emblems, pictures, clocks, or any combination thereof that are painted, printed, stamped, raised, or in any manner outlined or attached, designed to inform or advertise or draw attention to or promote merchandise, services, or activities. Types of non-exempt signs include the following:
(1) BILLBOARD and POLE SIGNS. Any exterior sign supported by an upright(s), pole(s), or column(s) with a ground clearance of not less than nine feet.
(2) GROUND SIGNS. Any exterior sign supported by an upright(s), pole(s), or column(s) with a ground clearance of not more than nine feet.
(3) FUTURE DEVELOPMENT SIGNS. Signs constructed for the purpose of advertising a forthcoming development, business or intended use of the property.
(4) MARQUEE SIGNS. Any exterior sign attached to or hung from a marquee canopy or other covered structure projecting from or adjacent to a building and extending beyond the building surface.
(5) PORTABLE SIGNS. Any exterior sign which is located on a trailer or other vehicle or includes wheels or is designed to be readily movable from one location to another.
(6) PROJECTING SIGNS. Any sign which is attached to a building exterior and which extends more than 12 inches from the face of the building surface.
(7) TEMPORARY SIGNS. Any exterior sign constructed of cloth, canvas, fabric or other light temporary material, with or without a structural frame, intended for a limited period of display, which period is not to run in excess of seven days, including decorative displays for holidays or public demonstrations.
(8) WALL SIGNS. Any sign adhered to the exterior face of a building wall, glazed window, panel or door extending not more than 12 inches from the building surface. Any sign visible from the exterior through a glazed window, panel or door comprising more than 25% of the area of that single piece of glass as viewed from the exterior and located within six feet of that glazed window panel or door.
