The Fire Chief and Assistant Fire Chief shall serve a term of one year and until their successors are appointed and qualified; provided that their terms of office shall expire on the last day of April following their appointments, and may be removed in the manner provided for the removal of officers; provided that if any member of the Fire Department having a rank therein shall be appointed Fire Chief or Assistant Fire Chief, upon the expiration of his or her term or the termination of his or her services for any reason, he or she shall resume the status of rank held before his or her appointment as Fire Chief or Assistant Fire Chief.
