A. All streets adjacent to elementary and junior high schools, whether public or private, within the city, and such additional streets near schools as are posted with school zone signs, are designated as school zones. School zones shall be in effect during the posted hours, Monday through Friday during the regular school year, unless otherwise posted. Posting of school zones shall be as approved by the mayor and board of commissioners. Considerations for school zones may be recommended to the mayor and board of commissioners after a traffic study by the metropolitan area planning commission.
B. Any person who operates a vehicle in violation of this section may be charged with the offense of "speeding in a school zone".
1. The violation of this section is punishable by a fine not to exceed one hundred fifty dollars ($150.00) plus costs if the violator is traveling ten (10) miles per hour or less above the posted limit.
2. If the violator is traveling more than ten (10) miles per hour above the posted limit, the fine shall not exceed two hundred dollars ($200.00) plus costs. (Ord. 2014-16, 5-6-2014)
