1446.05 ALARM SYSTEMS.
   (a)   Smoke Alarms.
      (1)   Before a certificate of occupancy is issued therefor, a dwelling unit shall be equipped with a smoke alarm which is U.L, listed.
      (2)   A smoke detector shall be installed outside of each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms and on each additional story of the family living unit, including basements but excluding crawl spaces and unfinished attics.
      (3)   A smoke detector in a room with a ceiling slope of greater than a one-foot rise per eight feet (one meter rise per eight meters) horizontally, shall be located at the high side of the room.
      (4)   A smoke detector installed in a stairwell shall be so located as to ensure that smoke rising in the stairwell cannot be prevented from reaching the detector by an intervening door or obstruction.
      (5)   A smoke detector installed to protect a sleeping area in accordance with paragraph (a)(2) hereof shall be located outside of the bedrooms, but in the immediate vicinity of the sleeping area.
      (6)   A smoke detector shall be located on or near the ceiling.
      (7)   The home buyer may purchase and install the smoke alarm, or the prime contractor shall be required to furnish and install the smoke alarm.
   (b)   Burglar Alarms. The prime contractor shall suggest in writing to the purchaser of a home under construction the option of having an alarm system of his or her choice installed during the construction period.
