1446.02 EXTERIOR DOORS.
   Except for vehicular access doors, all exterior doors of a residential building, including the door leading from an attached garage area into the dwelling unit, shall be equipped as follows:
   (a)   Wood and Metal Doors.
      (1)   All wood doors shall be of solid core construction with a minimum thickness of one and three-fourths inches.
      (2)   Hollow steel doors shall be of a minimum eighteen-gauge U.S. steel and have sufficient reinforcement to maintain the designed thickness of the door when any locking device is installed, such reinforcement being able to restrict the collapsing of the door around any locking device.
      (3)   Except where clear vision panels are installed, the entry used primarily by guests or visitors shall be equipped with a wide-angle, 160-degree door viewer.
      (4)   All exterior doors shall be mounted with the hinge on the interior of the building. Where exterior out-swinging doors are required, such doors shall have nonremovable hinge pins.
   (b)   Locks.
      (1)   Except for vehicular access doors, all exterior doors of a residential building, including the door leading from an attached garage area into the dwelling unit, shall be equipped with a thumb-latch type deadbolt lock.
      (2)   If any glass is utilized within forty inches of a locking mechanism on a door, excluding French-type doors, such glass and/or door shall be protected from violation by one of the following options:
         A.   Laminated glass;
         B.   Iron or steel grills of at least one-eighth inch material with a minimum two-inch mesh secured on the inside of the glass; or
         C.   Iron bars of at least one-half inch round, or one inch by one-fourth inch flat, steel material, spaced not more than three inches apart, secured on the inside of the glass.
      (3)   Paragraphs (b)(2)B. and C. hereof shall not interfere with the operation of opening windows if such windows are required to be openable by State or City codes.
      (4)   A double-cylinder deadbolt lock may be used at the request of the homeowner. If such a lock is used, the protective devices enumerated in paragraph (b)(2) hereof may be eliminated.
   (c)   Keying Requirements. The general contractor shall use a keying system that incorporates one of the following:
      (1)   A construction cylinder that will be removed upon occupancy and replaced with a new cylinder and all keys furnished to the owner;
      (2)   A cylinder system that admits construction keys during construction but whose pin system will be reset by the owner's key upon occupancy, thereby denying use of the construction keys; or
      (3)   The original cylinders used during construction may be repinned and new keys furnished to the owner.
   (d)   Deadbolt Lock Specifications. All deadbolt locks shall have the following:
      (1)   A minimum five-pin tumbler;
      (2)   A bolt extending into the receiving guide a minimum of one inch;
      (3)   A solid, tapered, free-turning exterior trim ring; and
      (4)   Components of case-hardened steel or its equivalent.
   (e)   Door Jambs. Door jambs shall be installed with solid backing in such a manner that no voids exist between the strike jamb and the frame opening for a vertical distance of six inches to each side of any strike.
   (f)   Strikes. Metal strikes shall be required on all locking devices and shall have a minimum thickness of sixteen-gauge U.S. steel. In wood framing, such strikes shall be mortised and secured with screws sufficient to anchor the strike into the two-by-four stud or its equivalent member behind the door frame.
   (g)   French or Double Doors. The inactive leaf of a double door shall be equipped with metal flush bolts having a minimum embedment of five-eighths of an inch into the head and threshold of the door frame. A double-cylinder deadbolt must be used to secure active doors.
   (h)   Sliding Glass Doors. A sliding glass door shall be equipped as follows:
      (1)   Such door shall have a metal guide track top and bottom.
      (2)   The operable sliding glass door shall be installed on the inside track and be such that it cannot easily be lifted out of the track when in the locked position.
      (3)   A secondary locking device shall be required on all sliding glass doors.
