(A) Following too closely. The driver of a motor vehicle shall not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent, having due regard for the speed of such vehicles and the traffic upon the condition of the highway.
(1) The driver of any motor vehicle of the second division or motor vehicle drawing another vehicle, when traveling upon a roadway outside of a business or residence district, shall not follow within 300 feet of another motor vehicle of the second division or motor vehicle drawing another vehicle. The provisions of this subdivision shall not be construed to prevent overtaking and passing, nor shall the same apply upon any lane specially designated for use by motor vehicles of the second division.
(2) Motor vehicles being driven upon any roadway outside of a business or residence district in a caravan or motorcade, whether or not towing other vehicles, shall be so operated as to allow sufficient space between each such vehicle or combination of vehicles so as to enable any other vehicle to enter and occupy such space without danger. This provision shall not apply to funeral processions.
(B) Passing vehicles proceeding in opposite directions. Drivers of vehicles proceeding in opposite directions, except as provided in division (A), shall pass each other to the right, and upon roadways having width for not more than one line of traffic in each direction, each driver shall give to the other at least one-half of the main traveled portion of the roadway as nearly as possible.
(C) Overtaking a vehicle on the left. The following rules shall govern the overtaking and passing of vehicles proceeding in the same direction, subject to those limitations, exceptions, and special rules hereinafter stated:
(1) The driver of a vehicle overtaking another vehicle proceeding in the same direction shall pass to the left thereof at a safe distance, and shall not again drive to the right side of the roadway until safely clear of the overtaken vehicle;
(2) Except when overtaking and passing on the right is permitted, the driver of an overtaken vehicle shall give way to the right in favor of the overtaking vehicle on audible signal, and shall not increase the speed of his vehicle until completely passed by the overtaking vehicle;
(3) The driver of a two-wheeled vehicle may not, in passing upon the left of any vehicle proceeding in the same direction, pass upon the right of any other vehicle proceeding in the same direction unless there is an unobstructed lane of traffic available to permit such passing maneuver safely;
(4) Limitations on overtaking on the left. No vehicle shall e driven to the left side of the center of the roadway in overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction unless authorized by the provisions of this section and unless left side is clearly visible and is free of oncoming traffic for a sufficient distance ahead to permit such overtaking and passing to be completely made without interfering with the safe operation of any vehicle approaching from the opposite direction or any vehicle overtaken. In every event the overtaking vehicle must return to an authorized lane of travel as soon as practicable, and in the event the passing movement involves the use of a lane authorized for vehicles approaching from the opposite direction, before coming within 200 feet of any vehicle approaching from the opposite direction.
(D) Further limitations on driving to the left of center of roadway. No vehicle, in overtaking and passing another vehicle, may be driven to the left side of the roadway under the following conditions (except when said vehicle is upon a one-way roadway or upon a roadway with unobstructed pavement of sufficient width for two or more lanes of moving traffic in each direction when such movement can be made with safety):
(1) When approaching the crest of a grade or upon a curve in the highway where the driver's view is obstructed within such distance as to create a hazard in the event another vehicle might approach from the opposite direction.
(2) When approaching within 100 feet of or traversing any intersection or railroad grade crossing.
(E) Overtaking a vehicle on the right.
(1) The driver of a vehicle with three or more wheels may overtake and pass upon the right of another vehicle only under the following conditions:
(a) When the vehicle overtaken is making or about to make a left turn;
(b) Upon a street or highway with unobstructed pavement not occupied by parked vehicles of sufficient width for two or more lines of moving vehicles in each direction; and
(c) Upon a one-way street, or upon any roadway on which traffic is restricted to one direction of movement, where the roadway is free from obstructions and of sufficient width for two or more lines of moving traffic.
(2) The driver of a two wheeled vehicle may not pass upon the right of any other vehicle proceeding In the same direction unless the unobstructed pavement to tho right of the vehicle being passed is of a width of not less than eight feet;
(3) The driver of a vehicle may overtake and pass another vehicle upon the right only under conditions permitting such movement in safety. In no event shall such movement be made by driving off the pavement or main-traveled portion of the roadway.
(F) No passing zones.
(1) The corporate authority may determine those portions of any highway where overtaking and passing or driving to the left of the roadway would be especially hazardous and may, by appropriate signs or markings on the roadway, indicate the beginning and end of such zones. When the signs or marking are in place and clearly visible to an ordinarily observant person, every driver of a vehicle shall obey the directions thereof.
(2) Where signs or markings are in place to define a no-passing zone as set forth in division (a), no driver may at any time drive on the left side of the roadway within the no-passing zone or on the left side of any pavement striping designed to mark such a no-passing zone throughout its length.
(3) The pavement striping designed to mark the no-passing zone may be crossed:
(a) From the left-hand lane for the purpose of completing a pass that was begun prior to the beginning of the zone in the driver's direction of travel; or
(b) From the right-hand lane when making a left turn into a driveway or entrance.
