§ 33.02  HIRING OF POLICE OFFICERS.
   (A)   Any applicant for the position of police officer for the village shall submit to the following:
      (1)   A written examination prepared for the village and administered at the expense of the village.  To be considered for appointment to the Police Department, the applicant must obtain a minimum passing grade of 70% on the written examination;

      (2)   An oral examination administered by the Chief of Police, two members of the Police Department appointed by the Chief of Police, the Mayor and two members of Council appointed by the Mayor.  In lieu of the foregoing, an oral examination may be administered by an independent qualified professional person, persons, or organization authorized by Council; and
      (3)   A complete background investigation, which information shall be made known to the oral examiners prior to the oral examination.
   (B)   No applicant may be considered for appointment unless the applicant has met all the minimum requirements as stated in divisions (A)(1) and (A)(2) above.
   (C)   The oral examiners shall compile a written list of those applicants who meet the minimum requirements for consideration as per division (A) above.
   (D)   The written list of applicants who meet the minimum requirements of division (A) above shall be submitted to the Mayor.  This list shall include the results of the oral and written examinations and the background investigation.
   (E)   The Mayor shall make the appointment to the Police Department from the written list submitted to him or her, with the consent of Council.
   (F)   No person shall receive an appointment under this section unless he or she has not more than 60 days prior to receiving this appointment passed a physical examination, given by a licensed physician, showing that he or she meets the physical requirements necessary to perform the duties of the position to which he or she is to be appointed as established by the Council.  The appointing authority shall, prior to making the appointment, file with the Police and Firefighter’
   (G)   Should the applicant appointed by the Mayor fail the physical examination, then the Mayor shall appoint another person from the list of applicants who meet the minimum requirements of division (A) above provided to him or her by the Police Chief.
   (H)   The person appointed as police officer shall serve a probationary period of six months, during which time the appointee shall receive full salary of the position appointed to and all benefits offered to non-probationary members of the Police Department.
