7-2-1: DEFINITIONS:
ADEQUATE FOOD:
The provision at suitable intervals for the species, of a quantity of wholesome foodstuff for the species, physical condition, and age, sufficient to maintain an adequate level of nutrition in the animal, such foodstuff to be served in a clean receptacle, dish, or container.
ADEQUATE SHELTER:
A physical structure or place suitable for maintaining the health and life of an animal.
ADEQUATE WATER:
An adequate supply of clean, fresh, potable water provided at suitable intervals for the species, physical condition and age of the animal provided at least once every twelve (12) hours.
ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER:
A person appointed by the Elko County Sheriff or the Board of Elko County Commissioners for the propose of enforcement of the provisions of this chapter and state laws relating to animals and animal control.
DOG:
Any domesticated animal of the canine family of either sex. The term "dog does not include wolves or wolf hybrids.
NON-ALTERED DOG:
A dog, whether male or female, which has not been surgically rendered incapable of producing offspring.
OWNER:
Any person keeping, harboring, or having charge or control of, or permitting any dog or animal to habitually remain on or be lodged or fed within such person s house, yard, or premises. This term shall not apply to veterinarians or kennel operators temporarily maintaining on their premises dogs or other animals owned by others for a period of less than thirty (30) days.
PERSON WITH DISABILITY:
A person with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities.
RUNNING AT LARGE:
Any place off the premises of the owner or person having custody and control of a dog and not accompanied by and under the control of the owner or any other responsible person by physical restraint or signal command or voice command.
SERVICE ANIMAL:
A dog or other animal that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities.
SPAY OR NEUTERED DOG:
A dog, whether male or female, which has been surgically rendered incapable of producing offspring, as evidenced by a signed statement to that effect by a licensed veterinarian. (Ord. 1994-A, 3-3-94, eff. 3-17-94; amd. Ord. 2023-02, 2-15-2023)
