(A) The Police Department shall enforce all street traffic laws of the city. The officers of the Police Department are authorized to direct all traffic by voice, hand or signal in conformance with the traffic laws; providing that, in the event of a fire or other emergency or to expedite traffic or to safeguard pedestrians, officers of the Police Department may direct traffic as conditions may require notwith-standing the provisions of the traffic laws and it shall constitute a misdemeanor for any person to operate a vehicle other than in conformance with the direction of such police officer under the conditions above enumerated.
(B) A violation of this section shall be punishable as provide in G.S. § 20-114.1.
