§ 5.11 COARSE AGGREGATE.
   (A)   Coarse aggregate shall consist of gravel or crushed stone from an established source approved by the engineer. Coarse aggregate shall not contain more than 2%, by weight, of shale, coal and soft particles nor more than 2.5%, by weight of silt and clay and shall be free from injurious amounts of deleterious substances. All coarse aggregate shall comply with the following requirements as to soundness, abrasion and size of particles and shall comply with ASTM Specification C-33 for “Concrete Aggregate”.
   (B)   Coarse aggregate will be considered as unsound if any class of particles in the representative sample has more than 12% weight loss when subjected to five cycles of the sodium sulfate soundness test in conformance with ASTM Specification C-88 “Soundness of Aggregates by Use of Sodium Sulfate or Magnesium Sulfate”.
   (C)   When the coarse aggregate is subjected to a test for resistance to abrasion in compliance with ASTM Specification C-131, the maximum percentage of wear shall be 50.
   (D)   Coarse aggregate shall be IDOT Gradation 3, Durability Class 3. Samples of the coarse aggregate shall be submitted to the engineer prior to use.
