6-1-2: OFFICE OF CHIEF CREATED:
There is hereby created the office of chief of police, who shall be appointed by the mayor, by and with the approval of the city council, and who shall serve in such capacity for an indefinite term, and who may be removed and discharged by the mayor. In such case the mayor shall file with the city council the reasons for such removal or discharge, which removal or discharge shall not become effective unless confirmed by a majority vote of the corporate authorities.
The position of chief of the police department shall not necessarily be by appointment from among members of the police department.
No appointee, who was, immediately preceding such appointment, an employee of the police department, shall lose his status in the department of such appointment, but said appointee, at the time he is replaced and removed from the position of chief, shall revert back to the same status held prior to such appointment.
