Uintah and Ouray reservation lands are lands held in trust for the Ute Indian Tribe. "Trust lands" mean those lands of the reservation that are held in trust by the United States for the benefit of the tribe, an individual or group of individuals. The Ute Indian Tribe is a federally recognized Indian tribe and, as such, is a public agency duly authorized to provide for the maintenance of law and order. Pursuant to its status as a sovereign Indian nation, the Ute Indian Tribe possesses the inherent authority to provide for zoning, development permits, licenses and building permits over its lands held in trust.
