143.01 HOURS OF WORK.
   (a)    On and after November 7, 1961, the Fire Chief shall divide the uniform force of the Fire Department into not less than two platoons. The Fire Chief shall keep such a platoon of the uniformed force on duty twenty-four consecutive hours, after which the platoon serving twenty-four consecutive hours shall be allowed to remain off duty at least twenty-four consecutive hours. Each individual member of the platoon, in addition to receiving a minimum of twenty-four hours off duty in each period of forty-eight consecutive hours, shall receive an additional period of twenty-four consecutive hours off duty in each period of six days, so that no individual member shall be on duty more than a total of ninety-six hours in consecutive periods of twelve days each.
   The provisions of this section relating to the off-duty periods shall not apply should a three-platoon system be set up, wherein members work twenty-four consecutive hours, immediately followed by forty-eight consecutive hours off duty.
   (b)    The requirements of subsection (a) hereof shall not apply during any period of extraordinary emergency.
   (c)    Nothing contained in this section shall affect the provisions of any other existing ordinance or custom granting vacations, rates of pay or leaves of absence.
   (d)    No provisions of any other existing ordinance shall be construed as authorizing any action inconsistent with the provisions of this section.
   (e)    All ordinances and parts of ordinances in conflict with the provisions of this section, and to extent of such conflict only, are hereby repealed.
   (f)    Should any section, clause or provision of this section be declared by any court to be invalid, the same shall not affect the validity of the section as a whole or any part thereof, other than the part declared invalid.
   (g)    This section shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law, and shall not be repealed by act of Council for a period of five years thereafter. (Initiative Ord. Passed 11-7-61.)
