The city shall place and maintain official traffic- control devices when and as required under the traffic code of the city to make effective the provisions of the ordinances, and may place and maintain such additional official traffic-control devices as it may deem necessary to regulate, warn or guide traffic under the traffic ordinances of the city or the State Motor Vehicle Laws.
