For the purpose of this chapter, the following definitions shall apply unless the context clearly indicates or requires a different meaning.
BIOREMEDIATION. The natural process in which microorganisms (that is, bacteria) break down petroleum products in the soil.
ENHANCED BIOREMEDIATION. The addition of microorganisms or chemicals to speed up the natural rate of breakdown of petroleum products in the soil.
HAZARDOUS WASTE. As follows:
(1) Any waste classified as hazardous by any federal or state statute;
(2) Any waste classified as hazardous by rule or regulation of any federal or state agency;
(3) Any waste classified as hazardous by any ordinance, rule, or regulation heretofore or hereafter adopted by the county or any department or agency thereof;
(4) Any waste that is ignitable, reactive, or corrosive; or
(5) Any waste which when improperly handled, treated, transported, or disposed of can lead to an increase in mortality or morbidity.
LAND FARMING. A method of removing petroleum compounds from soils. Contaminated soils are removed from the ground, spread over a given area, and periodically tilled to speed up the release of VOCs and breakdown of the contaminants.
(1) On-site land farming/bioremediation which is defined as
LAND FARMING wherein all contaminated soils are placed on the same contiguous tract from which they are removed; and
(2) Off-site land farming/bioremediation which is defined as any other treatment of soils other than on-site land farming, including but not limited to dedicated contaminated soil facilities wherein soils are brought in from other tracts on a repeated basis.
REMEDIATION. The process of cleaning up contamination.
VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUND (VOC). Carbon-containing compounds that readily vaporize (that is, change from a liquid to a gas) at normal temperatures and pressures.
