Existing buildings, structures, and premises shall be maintained to the extent required of the N.C. State Building Code cycle in effect when initially granted a certificate of occupancy. Changes in occupancy or use, additions, alterations, repairs, changes or modifications to components of the means of egress, or storage features shall not be permitted, and considered in violation of the N.C. State Building Code, unless a permit is obtained, the permitted work inspected and approval granted by the appropriate Code Official(s), and there is a valid certificate of occupancy provided by the Building Official.
