The chief of police shall report to the city manager all breaches of the peace and other violations of this code and other ordinances which may come to his knowledge. He shall be diligent in the discovery of violations of this code and ordinances defining and providing for the abatement of nuisances and for the protection of streets, alleys, sidewalks, shade trees, etc., and shall promptly give notice to the author of any nuisance, as defined by law, to abate the same and shall see that the same is promptly abated or the offender brought to trial.
