The city may appropriate moneys for the maintenance of the fire department and provide said department with necessary firefighting equipment and supplies. The amount so appropriated may be paid directly to the department or be used in the payment for equipment and supplies, and for reasonable maintenance and costs, upon proper vouchers presented to the city finance officer.
