§ 53.037 CONSTRUCTION METHODS; PLUMBING REQUIREMENTS.
   (A)   Construction methods.
      (1)   The size, slope, depth, and alignment of the building sewer shall be subject to the approval of the Superintendent. In no case shall the inside diameter of the building sewer be less than four inches. If six-inch diameter pipe is used, the slope shall not be less than one-eighth inch per foot. If four-inch or five-inch diameter pipe is used, the slope shall not be less one-fourth inch per foot. The depth of the building sewer shall be sufficient to afford protection from frost.
      (2)   The building sewer shall be laid at a uniform grade and in straight alignment, insofar as possible. Changes in direction shall be made only with properly curved pipe and fittings, unless the break in alignment is made at a manhole facilitating servicing.
      (3)   Installation shall be in accordance with State Standard Specifications for Water and Sewer Main Construction. All building sewer shall be constructed of materials approved by the city. Generally, all building sewer shall be constructed of the following materials:
         (a)   Ductile iron pipe; and
         (b)   PVC solid wall plastic pipe (6-inch diameter maximum) SDR-35.
      (4)   All pipe joints must be gas-tight and watertight and are subject to the approval of the city. Transition joints from one pipe material to another shall be made using fittings manufactured for such transitions.

   (B)   Plumbing Code requirements.
      (1)   The size, slope, alignment, materials of construction of a building sewer, and the methods to be used in excavating, placing of the pipe, jointing, testing, and backfilling the trench shall all conform to the requirements of the Building and Plumbing Code or other applicable rules and regulations of the city.
      (2)   In the absence of code provisions or in amplification thereof, the materials and procedures set forth in appropriate specifications of the American Society of Testing materials, Water Pollution Control Federation Manual of Practice No. 9, and State Standard Specifications for Water and Sewer Main Construction shall apply.

   (C)   Elevation
      (1)    Whenever possible, the building sewer shall be brought to the building at an elevation below the basement floor.
      (2)   In all buildings in which any building drain is too low to permit gravity flow to the public sewer, sanitary sewage carried by such building drain shall be lifted by a means which is approved in accordance with § 53.020(A) and discharged to the building sewer.
