Upon the rendition of judgment against any defendant for the violation of any ordinance of the town, the Police Justice shall take an order, and enter the same upon his or her docket, that if the defendant shall neglect or refuse to satisfy such judgment and costs, he or she shall be confined in the Town Jail or other safe place provided for that purpose one day for each $1 of such judgment and costs, and execution shall proceed immediately upon the rendition of judgment; every person so committed shall be employed at hard labor on the streets or other public improvements of the town, under the direction of the Marshal, until such fine and costs are fully paid and allowed, at the rate of $1 per day, each day to consist of eight hours of faithful work.
