Except as specifically defined herein, all words used in this chapter have their customary dictionary definitions. For the purpose of this chapter, certain words or terms used herein are defined as follows, and these definitions apply only to that subchapter and section of this chapter. Words used in the present tense include the future tense. Words used in the singular include the plural, and words used in the plural include the singular.
BOARD OF PLANNING AND ADJUSTMENT. The Town of Columbus Board of Planning and Adjustment. This Board serves to fulfill the duties of the town Planning Board and the town Board of Adjustments. In the context of its planning responsibilities, it is sometimes referred to in this chapter as the Planning Board. In the context of its Board of Adjustment responsibilities, it is sometimes referred to in this chapter as the Board of Adjustment or the Zoning Board of Adjustment.
BUILDING. Includes the word STRUCTURE.
COUNTY COMMISSIONERS. The Polk County Board of Commissioners.
LOT. Includes the words PLOT or PARCEL.
MAY. Permissive.
ORDINANCE. The Zoning Ordinance of the town.
PERSON or APPLICANT. Includes a firm, association, organization, partnership, corporation, company, trust and an individual or governmental unit.
SHALL. Mandatory.
STREET. Includes the words ROAD and HIGHWAY.
TOWN COUNCIL. The Town of Columbus Town Council.
ZONING MAP or COLUMBUS ZONING MAP. The official zoning map of the town.
