Any animal that is found by animal care services to be at large, stray, nuisance, inhumanely or cruelly treated, neglected, has bitten another animal or human being, or is being kept in conditions which violate this chapter may be impounded at the animal care services center and there confined in a humane manner until released to the owner or agent, or the animal becomes property of animal care services.
A. The stray hold period for any animal impounded for being at large, stray, or nuisance will be for a period of time as determined below or until an owner is notified, whichever is the lesser. At the end of that period, if the animal is not returned to the owner, that animal becomes the property of animal care services, which may dispose of that animal in any manner that it deems humane and compatible to its policies.
1. A period of not less than three days for dogs four months and older, or cats four months or older with signs of ownership (microchip, collar, or declawed).
2. There will be no stray hold period for puppies and kittens four months and under.
3. For any animal not specifically referenced above, stray hold period will be determined by Animal Care Services staff.
C. Any animal deemed to be suffering with little or no chance for survival or by court order may be humanely euthanized before the holding period has expired. (Ord. 48- 2019, 2019; Ord. 32-2019 § 1, 2019; Ord. 13-2012 § 5, 2012; Ord. 08-17 § 1 (part), 2008; Prior code § 4-21)
