Sec. 1   Incorporation of city in Catawba County.
   That the City of Claremont, in the County of Catawba, be and the same is hereby incorporated by the name and style of Claremont, and shall be subject to all the provisions contained in chapter 62 of the code. (Pr. L. 1893, Ch. 11, Sec. 1; Ord. of 2/3/76)
Sec. 2   Corporate limits.
   That the corporate limits of said city shall be one-half (1/2) mile east, west, north and south from the depot of the Western North Carolina Railroad Company.
   That the corporate limits of Claremont shall be more particularly defined as follows, to wit: Beginning at a point one-half (1/2) mile east of the center of the Claremont Southern Railway Depot and running south one-half (1/2) mile to a stake, the southeast corner of the city limits; thence west one (1) mile to a stake, the southwest corner of the city limits; then north one (1) mile to a stake, the northwest corner of the city limits; thence east one (1) mile to a stake, the northeast corner of the city limits; thence south one-half (1/2) mile to the beginning. Sec. 3   Terms of mayor and councilmen.
   (a)   At the regular annual election of city officers in May, 1961, in the City of Claremont, the qualified voters shall elect a mayor and five (5) councilmen.
   (b)   The mayor to be elected in 2005 shall serve for a term of four years or until a successor is duly elected and qualified. Thereafter, a mayor shall be elected every four years in the odd-numbered years and the term of office shall be four years.
   (c)   Of the five (5) councilmen now holding office in the City of Claremont, Catawba County, successors to the offices now held by Harold McRee Wilson, Eddy Gaither Harwell, and William David Watts shall be elected at the November, 1975, election, and every four (4) years thereafter, for the City of Claremont and shall serve for terms of four (4) years or until their successors are elected and qualified. Successors to the offices now held by Timothy Allan Lowrance and Gary Wayne Carpenter shall be elected at the regular November, 1977, election, and every four (4) years thereafter, for the City of Claremont and shall serve for terms of four (4) years or until their successors are elected and qualified. The terms of office of Timothy Allan Lowrance and Gary Wayne Carpenter are hereby extended to November, 1977, or until their successors are elected and qualified. Thereafter, as the terms of office expire, councilmen elected at regular town elections shall serve for terms of four (4) years or until their successors are duly elected and qualified. Sec. 4   Liquor license.
   The county commissioners of Catawba County shall not grant license to any person or persons to sell intoxicating liquors within the corporate limits of said town [city] without the permission of the board of commissioners [councilmen] of said town [city], and any license granted without such assent shall be utterly void. Sec. 5   form of government.
   The city shall operate under the council-manager form of government in accordance with Part 2, Article 7, Chapter 160A, of the General Statutes. (Ord. of 12/8/78)
