It shall be the duty of the Chief of Police or his or her designee to take into custody any domestic animal found running at large or unrestrained as required under this chapter and, after making reasonable effort to contact the owner if ascertainable, either transport the animal to a suitable municipal shelter, the County Animal Control Shelter or to turn the animal over to an appropriate municipal or county animal control officer, if practical.
