Sick leave shall be accumulated at the rate of 1.25 days per month. The amount of sick leave time any one employee may accrue is unlimited. Sick leave shall be charged for absences from work resulting from sickness or injury to an employee or to a member of his or her immediate family, where it is necessary for the employee to care for that person. Sick leave may be taken for medical, dental or optical examinations or treatment of an employee.
Three days of sick leave may be taken by an employee in the event of death of a member of his or her immediate family or the spouse's immediate family, which shall consist of father, mother, brother, sister, spouse, children or stepchildren, grandparents and grandchildren.
Any employee using more than three days of sick leave during any pay period must, if requested, provide the employee’s supervisor with a physician's statement attesting that such employee was in fact unable to work. Whenever an employee is off on sick leave for more than 30 days, they must provide the Clerk-Treasurer with a monthly excuse from the doctor. Whenever sick leave exceeds 240 work days or 2,080 hours, such employee must apply for PERS disability.
Untimely death of an employee with any years of service and application is made for life insurance, or a retiring employee with ten or more years of service and application is made for PERS or disability retirement benefits, shall be paid one-half of accumulated time of sick leave (not to exceed one-half of 120 days) the same to be paid at the end of the next pay period after death or retirement.
Heads of departments are hereby authorized to grant sick leave to any employee, if they deem the same to be necessary or beneficial to the Village and their respective departments.
If the Mayor, Council or Village Administrator suspects the misuse of sick leave by an employee, he or she or it shall have the right to modify or reject any claim.
Upon retirement, sick leave is not transferable to another employee.
