(A) All joints and connections shall be made gas-tight and watertight. Caste iron pipe joints shall be firmly packed with oakum or hemp and filled with molten lead, according to federal specifications QQ-1-156, and not less than one inch deep. Lead shall be run in one pouring and caulked tight. No paint, varnish, or other coating shall be permitted on jointing material until the joint has been tested and approved.
(B) All joints in vitrified clay pipe and metals shall be made with approved hot pouring joints. Materials for hot poured joints shall not soften sufficiently to destroy the efficiency of the joint when subjected to a temperature of 160ºF, not to be soluble in any of the wastes carried by the drainage system.
(C) The joint shall first be caulked tight with jute or hemp or similar approved materials. Other joining materials and methods may be used with the approval of the Superintendent.
