THE BRUNSWICK DIVISION OF FIRE AND RESCUE BUREAU OF FIRE PREVENTION ************************** You may be living in a building that is supposed to be of fire-resistant construction, but this does not mean it is impossible to have a fire. Your room or apartment can have many things that will burn very rapidly and create deadly smoke, heat and gases that can cause you to lose consciousness very quickly. You should know the Division of Fire and Rescue phone numbers and the proper way to call them. Know where the fire alarm is located on your floor and how to use it. Know at least two ways to an exit stairway. A little time spent now, preplanning what you should do in case of a fire, may save your life or the lives of your family. IF THE FIRE IS IN YOUR ROOM OR APARTMENT (A) If the conditions permit it, CALL THE DIVISION OF FIRE AND RESCUE IMMEDIATELY. Give as much information as possible. PHONE 225-9111. (1) Give your street address or location. (2) Give the building number if there is more than one building at your address. (3) Give the floor level and room or apartment number. (4) Advise the Division of Fire and Rescue if there is an invalid or person who might need assistance in the room or apartment. (B) Leave the room or apartment as quickly as possible, closing as many doors or windows as you can, without endangering your own safety. ABOVE ALL, CLOSE THE DOOR INTO THE HALLWAY AS YOU LEAVE. (C) If you are unable to use your own phone, pull the fire alarm and make sure someone else calls the
Division of Fire and Rescue
. If you are able, pound on the door of adjacent rooms or apartments on your floor to be sure they have heard the alarm. (D) Leave the building via the exit stairway. DO NOT USE THE ELEVATOR IN CASE OF FIRE. It may be inoperative. (E) Await the arrival of the
Division of Fire and Rescue
. Give them as much information as you can as to what is burning and where. (F) REMAIN OUTSIDE THE BUILDING until you are advised by the
Division of Fire and Rescue
that it is safe to re-enter. IF THE FIRE IS IN YOUR BUILDING, BUT NOT IN YOUR APARTMENT If there is a fire and it is not on your floor, or if a fire or smoke in the hallway blocks your way to a fire exit: (A) Be sure to keep your door into the hallway closed, and remain in your apartment. (B) Seal the cracks around the door with towels, rugs, sheets or any thing else that might be available. (C) Go to the room with an outside window, closing as many doors between you and the hall door or fire as possible. (D) Open the window for ventilation and wait for help.
