(a) "Sign" means any display, figure, painting, drawing, placard, poster or other device visible from a public way which is designed, intended or used to convey a message, advertise, inform or direct attention to a person, institution, organization, activity, place, object or product.
(b) "Business sign" means a sign erected, maintained or used for the purpose of the display of messages appurtenant to the use of, products sold on, or the sale or lease of, or other activity conducted on the property on which it is displayed, or for a noncommercial message, on a lot in an O or NC District, which sign may be permitted only as an accessory use located on such premises. Also known as an on-premise sign.
(c) “Off-Premise Sign” means a sign whose message directs attention to a specific business, product, service, entertainment event or activity, or other commercial activity, or other message about something that is not sold, produced, manufactured, furnished, or conducted at the property upon which the sign is located, and which may be used from time-to-time to display a noncommercial message. Also known as an outdoor advertising sign.
(d) “Noncommercial Sign” means a sign with a message that conveys a noncommercial message and does not propose or promote a commercial transaction or direct attention to a good, product, commodity, business, service, event, or other object that serves as the basis of a commercial transaction.
(e) “Billboard” means an off-premise sign that exceeds 240 square feet.
