When stop signs are erected upon highways entering a through street at the entrance thereto, or at the entrance to any intersection, every driver shall stop before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection or, in the event there is no crosswalk, shall stop at a clearly marked stop line, but, if none, then before entering the intersection and at the point nearest the intersecting roadway where the driver has a view of approaching traffic on the intersecting highway, except when directed to proceed by a police officer or traffic-control signal, and shall yield the right-of-way to other vehicles which have entered the intersection or which are approaching so closely thereto as to constitute an immediate hazard, and shall similarly yield the right-of-way to pedestrians within or entering any crosswalk at the intersection.
