All proceedings in the City Court shall be conducted in the same manner as are trials in criminal cases before justices of the peace under the laws of the state and all persons tried before the City Court shall have the same remedies and rights of appeal as now are or may hereafter be prescribed by law in criminal cases before justices of the peace. The City Judge shall have the same right and authority to punish for contempt and maintain order in his or her court that justices of the peace have. All proceedings for the violation of any city law, both civil and criminal, must be prosecuted in the name of the city.
