On behalf of the city, the city council hereby exercises its option and elects to have the city and all of the employees of all departments, except the fire department, participate in the Texas Municipal Retirement System as provided in Texas Government Code title 8, subtitle G (Texas Government Code § 851.001 et seq.), and all of the benefits and obligations of such system are hereby accepted. Said fire department is not a participating department in the Texas Municipal Retirement System since the city fire department is covered by the State Firemen's Relief and Retirement Law and the city firefighters are members of the city Firemen's Relief and Retirement Fund.
