The following words, terms and phrases, when used in this article, shall have the meanings ascribed to them in this section, except where the context clearly indicates a different meaning:
Advanced life support, level 1 (ALS1), means transportation, the provision of medically necessary supplies and services, and either an ALS assessment by ALS personnel or the provision of at least one ALS intervention. Advanced life support includes, but is not limited to:
(1) Administration of intravenous (IV) fluids.
(2) Peripheral venipuncture.
(3) Blood drawing.
(4) Monitoring IV solutions.
(5) Administration of approved medications, IV, Sub Q, sublingual, nebulizer inhalation.
Advanced life support, level 2 (ALS2), means either:
(1) Transportation, medically necessary supplies and services, and at least three separate administrations of one or more medications by IV push/bolus or by continuous infusion; or
(2) Transportation, medically necessary supplies and services, and the provision of at least one of the following procedures:
a. Manual defibrillation/cardioversion.
b. Endotracheal intubation.
c. Cardiac pacing.
d. Chest decompression.
e. Surgical airway.
f. Intraosseous line.
ALS personnel means individuals trained to the level of emergency medical technician, intermediate or paramedic.
Basic life support (BLS) non-emergency means transportation and the provision of medically necessary supplies and services when staffed by emergency medical technician, basic, as defined by DSHS.
DSHS means Texas Department of State Health Services, formerly Texas Department of Health (TDH).
Emergency response means emergency response is a BLS or ALS1 level of service that has been provided in immediate response to a 911 call.
