(a) At any time after the expiration of the redemption period for an impounded animal, the ACD may allow adoption of the animal by the first person tendering to the city the applicable fees including adoption fees. adoption results in the city divesting ownership of the animal from any previous owner and transferring ownership to the adopting person.
(b) The chief of police has discretion on whether to waive or reduce fees associated with adoption.
(c) The ACD may implement a program for fostering impounded animals that are past their redemption period. The program may include adoption and if an animal is adopted, title and sole ownership of the animal by the city ceases and transfers to the person adopting the animal.
(d) In the event that an animal impounded for 45 or more days is not adopted, fostered, or transferred to a humane organization, the ACD may humanely euthanize the impounded animal.
(e) In the event that insufficient space exists for newly impounded animals, and that an animal past its redemption period is not adopted, fostered, or transferred to a humane organization, the ACD may humanely euthanize the impounded animal.

Ord. No. 034-2022, § 7, adopted September 13, 2022, repealed the former § 8-251, and § 6 of said ordinance enacted § 8-251 as set out herein. The former § 8-251 pertained to disposition of unpermitted/unlicensed animals and derived from Prior Code, § 3-37; Ord. of January 8, 1957; Ord. of August 24, 2010.
