The classified service of the City is hereby continued. The provisions of this chapter concerning appointments and tenure shall apply to every employee in the classified service. Other provisions of this chapter shall apply to every employee in the service of the City. The classified service of the City shall consist of those positions which are designated in the classified service list approved by the Council and filed with the City Clerk's Office. Every officer and employee who is not expressly included on such list shall be exempt from the classified service.
The council, by ordinance, may place additional departments, appointive officers, or employees under the operation of the civil service system. All employees and officers placed under the civil service system shall be deemed to be in the classified service of the city. Nothing contained in this article shall prevent the employment in the classified service on a part time basis of any officer or employee if the council, by ordinance or resolution, determines such employment to be in the best interests of the city. For the purposes of this article, "part time" shall mean continuous and regular employment at less than forty (40) hours per week. (1962 Code § 2-6.104)
