6-1-14: AUXILIARY CITIZEN POLICE:
   A.   Position Created; Appointment And Discharge: There is hereby created the position of (voluntary) auxiliary citizen police officer. Auxiliary citizen police officers shall be appointed and discharged by the chief of police from time to time as deemed necessary.
   B.   Qualifications And Training:
      1.   Auxiliary citizen police officers must be residents of the village and shall be fingerprinted prior to appointment and shall not have been convicted of a felony or other crime involving moral turpitude.
      2.   Prior to entering upon any duties, said persons shall receive a course of training on police procedures as shall be appropriate in the exercise of the powers conferred upon an auxiliary police officer, which training shall be determined and provided by the chief of police, as set forth in the "Berkeley Police Department Policies And Procedures Manual".
   C.   Duties And Authority: Auxiliary citizen police officers shall not be members of the regular police department and shall not supplement members of the regular police department in the performance of their assigned and normal duties, except as otherwise provided herein. Such auxiliary police officers shall only be assigned to perform the following duties in the village:
      1.   To aid or direct traffic within the village.
      2.   To aid in control of natural or manmade disasters.
      3.   To assist with crowd control and presence at community events.
      4.   To aid in case of civil disorder as directed by the police chief; provided, that in cases which render it impractical for members of the regular police department to perform the normal and regular police duties, the chief of police is hereby authorized to assign auxiliary citizen police officers to perform normal and regular police duties.
   D.   Identification: Identification symbols, including any badge or uniform, worn by such auxiliary citizen police officers shall be different and distinct from those used by members of the regular police department. Such auxiliary citizen police officers shall at all times, during the performance of their duties, be subject to the direction and control of the chief of police or of the superior officer in charge during such period of duty.
   E.   Firearms: Auxiliary citizen police officers will not carry firearms.
   F.   Compensation: The position of auxiliary citizen police officer is a voluntary one and is, therefore, not entitled to compensation from the village. (2016 Code)
