A. There is hereby created a police department, referred to in this chapter as the "department". The department shall consist of a chief of police, a deputy chief and such number of commanders, sergeants, patrol officers, dispatchers, records clerks and any other special officers as may from time to time be provided by the village president, with the advice and consent of the village board of trustees, and as budgeted for by the board of trustees.
B. The deputy chief and commanders may be appointed from any rank of sworn, full time officers of the department, but must have at least five (5) years of full time service as a police officer in the department. A deputy chief and commanders shall serve at the discretion of the chief of police and, if removed from the position, shall revert to the rank previously held, without regard as to whether a vacancy exists in that rank. A deputy chief or commander having been appointed from any rank of sworn full time officers shall be permitted, regardless of rank, to take promotional exams and be promoted to a higher classified rank than he currently holds without having to resign as a deputy chief or commander.
