§ 33.26 CLASSIFICATION OF PEACE OFFICER.
   (A)   Creation of classification; appointment. There is established the classification of peace officer. Peace officers shall be appointed by the Village President, with the advice and consent of the Board of Trustees.
   (B)   Requirements for classification eligibility. In order to be considered for appointment as a peace officer, a candidate must be a sworn member of the Fire Department and must have completed a course in fire and arson investigation approved by the Office of the State Fire Marshal pursuant to the Illinois Fire Protection Training Act.
   (C)   Terms of appointment; removal of appointment. Peace officers shall serve at the discretion of the Village President and Board of Trustees for a term of one year and the classification may be removed at the will of the Village President and Board of Trustees. Peace officers may be reappointed by the Village President at the end of each one-year term.
   (D)   Compensation. Members of the Fire Department classified as peace officers shall not be entitled to receive any additional compensation for such classification unless additional compensation is expressly conferred by the Mayor and Board of Trustees by a duly appointed ordinance.
   (E)   Powers and duties. Peace officers shall be conservators of the peace and shall have the following powers and duties:
      (1)   To arrest or cause to be arrested, with or without process, all persons who break the peace or are violating any village ordinance or any criminal law of the State of Illinois;
      (2)   To commit arrested persons for examination;
      (3)   To serve and execute within the limits of the village all warrants for the violation of village ordinances or criminal laws of the State of Illinois;
      (4)   All statutory and common law powers of sheriffs;
      (5)   To direct traffic and assist in traffic control;
      (6)   To act as watchmen on special assignments;
      (7)   To assist in parade control and to keep peace at all large gatherings in and about the community;
      (8)   In civil defense matters;
      (9)   In cases of riot, disaster and emergency control; and
      (10)   To perform such other related duties as directed by the Chief of Police, Mayor or Board of Trustees.
   (F)   Carrying firearms. Peace officers shall be authorized to carry firearms when in uniform and while in the performance of their duties only if the peace officer has satisfactorily completed a training program offered or approved by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standards Board which substantially conforms to standards promulgated pursuant to the Illinois Police Training Act and “An Act in relation to firearms training for peace officers,” approved August 29, 1975, as amended. Such training need not include exposure to vehicle and traffic law, traffic control and accident investigation or first aid, but shall include training in the law relating to the right of persons suspected of involvement in criminal activities.
