§ 28-170 STATEMENT OF INTENT.
   (A)   The city has a long and notable history beginning in its early days as a fur trading post during the country’s westward expansion, and continuing with the city’s connection to the United States military by the establishment of Offutt Air Force Base. Several of city’s residents have greatly benefited the city through their extraordinary and special efforts, accomplishments, and contributions. Some have even paid the ultimate sacrifice serving their country.
   (B)   The city finds that it is appropriate to name certain city buildings, parks, other fixed facilities and public places (“public facilities”), and streets in honor of prominent Nebraskans who achieved a public status worthy of long-term recognition. Commemorative street and public facility naming is an important vehicle for bringing the past into the present, helping weave history into the geographic fabric of everyday life.
