(A) Each applicant for a license, required by the preceding section, shall make application to the Permits and Inspections Department on blank forms prepared and furnished by such department and indicating thereon whether the application is for a master or journeyman mechanical license.
(B) Examination. Application for Mechanical examinations will be administered by an authorized testing agency, the applications for said examination shall be provided by the Permits and Inspections Department, and the applicant must provide proof of the following:
(1) A mechanical apprentice shall be employed full time under the supervision and guidance of a master mechanical contractor and shall be exempt from examination during the period and time said license is in effect. Mechanical apprentice licenses are established to provide individuals with the ability to pursue time and grade criteria for future licensing.
(2) An unlimited mechanical journeyman must have a minimum of three years of practical work experience under a licensed unlimited mechanical master as an apprentice and pass the journeyman unlimited air conditioning exam with a minimum grade of 70 percent.
(3) A limited mechanical journeyman must have a minimum of three years of practical work experience under a licensed mechanical master as an apprentice and pass the journeyman heating exam with a minimum grade of 70 percent. (The limitation of this license is for residential one and two family dwellings and accessory structures with a furnace not to exceed 200,000 BTUs of input and an air conditioning system not to exceed five tons of cooling capacity.)
(4) A limited sheet metal journeyman must have a minimum of three years of practical work experience under a licensed mechanical master as an apprentice and pass the sheet metal exam with a minimum grade of 70 percent.
(5) An unlimited sheet metal journeyman must have a minimum of three years of practical work experience under a licensed master mechanical contractor as an apprentice and pass the sheet metal examination with a minimum grade of 70 percent.
(6) An unlimited mechanical master must provide proof of a minimum of three years as an apprentice, and three years as a licensed mechanical journeyman and pass the residential air conditioning exam with a minimum grade of 70 percent. (The limitation of this license is for residential one and two family dwellings and accessory structures with a furnace not to exceed 200,000 BTUs of input and an air conditioning system not to exceed five tons of cooling capacity.)
(7) An unlimited mechanical master must provide proof of a minimum of three years as an apprentice, and three years as a licensed unlimited mechanical journeyman and pass the heating, air conditioning, refrigeration and ventilation exam with a minimum grade of 70 percent.

(A) Each applicant for a license required by this division of the Code shall appear before the Permits and Inspections Department, voluntarily or upon notice from the Permits and Inspections Department, and submit to examination and testing of his/her education and competency as may be required by this division in order to issue a license to the applicant.
(B) In lieu of the examination and testing of education referenced in (A) above, an applicant for a license under the provisions of this section may submit to the Permits and Inspections Department evidence, satisfactory to the building official, of having passed an examination and test equivalent to that required by this division, together with his/her license currently in effect issued to such applicant from a competent jurisdiction outside the jurisdiction of this city. If the building official finds that by virtue of such evidence and the license that the applicant has successfully passed an examination and testing of his/her education equivalent to that required by this division and also that the applicant then meets the other requisites of this division, the building official may accept such findings as an acceptable standard and issue to the applicant a license without submitting the applicant to further examination and testing.

Each applicant for a license required by this division shall pay to the city treasurer an examination fee as described in the Master Fee Schedule as either a master mechanical contractor or a mechanical journeyman.

Prior to receiving a license under the preceding section, an applicant who has successfully passed the master’s examination shall furnish a certificate of insurance which provides combined coverage for bodily injury and property damage in a minimum amount of $300,000.00, and shall strictly comply with this code and any other ordinances of the city relating to the installation, alteration, or repair of any mechanical system within the city and the extraterritorial jurisdiction of the city.

When an applicant for a license required by this division passes the required examination and test to the satisfaction of the Permits and Inspections Department, the building official shall notify the applicant of his/her score within 15 days of the examination. After payment of a license fee as described in the Master Fee Schedule as either a master mechanical contractor or a mechanical journeyman, the building official shall issue a license to do mechanical work in the city which shall be effective and valid through December 31 of each year.
